Halfway Over

Sorry in advance for the long-winded post.

It’s been my most productive year for me so far. There’s still a lot I want to do personally and I have the rest of the year which is exciting.

I have been brainstorming a Fallout game set in Texas, which became my main focus when doing my assignments last month.

Over the last month and change in my free time, I’ve been playing between every Fallout game and Skyrim to compare and contrast features and mechanics from the respective games.

The Fallout game I have envisioned would have gunplay and player combat customization similar to 76 and Skyrim, agency and exploration like Skyrim, mechanics, and features adjacent to 1, New Vegas - 76, and the atmosphere and tone mimicking Fallout 1 - New Vegas. I might elaborate more on my notes when I'm satisfied with them.

Using my assignments to figure out the mechanics I’d like to implement and items I’d like to make and include. I was thinking of making a cell or a few including items, characters, and mechanics as a proof of concept demo and something neat for my portfolio in Unreal Engine 5.

I am getting a much better feel of Maya and Unreal and looking into how to do the things I'd like to include for the demo in Unreal. Starting small with reverse engineering lockpicking mechanics to make my own. It’s ambitious to think about, but the worst that could happen is I don’t try, so why not?

Had to fill a scene with required figurines and objects for most of my assignments. Chose to pick a random encounter for two.

Inspired by Pavel Tarnowski's Fallout 2 artwork. Using the fast travel system which would be activated via car (10 for every 200 people I think was the ratio in the Fallout Bible). Traveling in a hot car for a prolonged time results in a “Heat Exhaustion” debuff. The encounter would only occur if the player has a high enough Luck and or Scavenger Perk. The player would find a working AC in an AC repair shop which will then be marked on your map. With a high enough Repair skill the player can fix it and install it on the car.

Here are the scenes, I had 5 days to create both. I don't like Substance Painter, but it's required. Constantly crashing during saves or renders. Not many free assets either. Does anyone know of any good websites with free Textures and Smart Materials for Substance Painter?

Sorry again for the long-winded post.
